Porsche 997.2 GT3 – Full Guide

The Porsche 997.2 GT3 (2009–2011) is the facelifted, enlarged evolution of the track-focused, naturally aspirated 911. Displacement grew to 3.8 litres and output to 435 hp, all from the motorsport-derived Mezger flat-six, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual only. It is the last naturally aspirated Mezger GT3 before the 991 switched to the DFI 9A1 engine.

Highlights

The last naturally aspirated Mezger GT3. Centre-lock wheels, standard dynamic engine mounts (PADM), optional front-axle lift and bucket seats. A road-legal track car with no IMS and no DFI, famed for its 8,500 rpm top end and hydraulic steering.

Common Issues

  • Mezger engine is extremely robust; main risks are over-revs and track abuse, not design flaws
  • Check for crash/track damage, kerbed centre-lock wheels, worn suspension spherical joints
  • Early recall on a rear wheel hub issue, confirm it was carried out
  • Clutch wear on hard-driven cars

Market Analysis (as of 2025)

  • Low mileage / exceptional: CHF 150,000+

Values are steadily rising as the last Mezger GT3.

Buying Considerations

  • Documented over-rev history (readable from the DME)
  • Evidence of track use and subsequent servicing
  • Confirm the hub recall was done
  • Original, unkerbed centre-lock wheels

FAQ

Manual only?
Yes. The 997.2 GT3 is manual-only; PDK did not arrive on the GT3 until the 991.

Does it have IMS or DFI issues?
No. The Mezger engine has neither.

Driving Experience

The benchmark analogue track-day 911: hydraulic steering, a screaming 8,500 rpm Mezger, a precise manual and fixed-wing downforce. Uncompromising but genuinely useable on the road.
