The enthusiast’s choice: Carrera 4S manual
Wide body, 385 hp, all-wheel drive and three pedals. The 4S with the 6-speed manual is our pick of the usable 997.2 range: the full Carrera look and all-weather pace, with the involvement and rarity of a manual gearbox.

The two engine families
DFI (MA1 / biturbo)
Carrera, Targa, GTS and Turbo use the direct-injection engines introduced with the 997.2. No IMS bearing, strong reliability, modern electronics and the option of PDK. The sensible, usable choice.
Mezger (dry sump)
GT3, GT3 RS, GT3 RS 4.0 and GT2 RS keep the motorsport-derived Mezger engine. No DFI, no IMS concern, race-bred and gloriously high-revving. The reason these cars are collector gold.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 997.2 have the IMS bearing problem?
No. All 997.2 engines (the DFI MA1 Carrera units and the Mezger GT/Turbo units) are free of the intermediate-shaft bearing issue that affected earlier water-cooled 911s.
Which 997.2 is the best investment?
The limited Mezger cars (GT3 RS 4.0, GT2 RS, Sport Classic, Speedster) have appreciated most. Among usable cars, the GT3 and the manual GTS have shown the strongest, steadiest growth. See Value & Market Trends.
Manual or PDK?
On the Carreras, PDK is quicker and both hold value well; manuals are increasingly sought after. On the Turbo, manuals command a premium. The GT3, GT3 RS and GT2 RS are manual-only.
What is the difference between DFI and Mezger engines?
DFI (MA1) engines power the Carrera, Targa, GTS and Turbo. The Mezger dry-sump engine powers the GT3, GT3 RS, GT3 RS 4.0 and GT2 RS. Both avoid the IMS issue; the Mezger is the motorsport-derived, high-revving unit prized by collectors.
